Now, a pair of computer-savvy UC Berkeley students are trying to do what lawmakers have been begging Twitter to do for months: call out automated bot accounts that spew false, deliberately divisive political propaganda under the dangerous guise of being real people with legitimate views.

On Halloween, while most of their fellow students were donning costumes and preparing for a night of celebration, Ash Bhat and Rohan Phadte officially launched Botcheck.me, a Google Chrome browser extension and website that lets people see whether there’s a real person — or a bot — behind Twitter accounts.“From our perspective, we think there’s huge need here,” said Bhat, whose name, yes, really does rhyme with bot.
The pair created an algorithm that predicts whether an account is a political propaganda bot by considering how it behaves. The bots generally post every few minutes, tweet false information, gain followers very quickly, and boost other propaganda accounts. Human-run accounts generally behave differently.
Users who think they see a bot can feed the Twitter handle into Botcheck.me. In return, the algorithm offers its best guess as to what they’re looking at.
The more people use the tool, the more Bhat and Phadte can “teach” the algorithm, and the more accurate the tool becomes.
The roommates, who both attended Santa Teresa High School in San Jose, had a chance to demonstrate how Botcheck.me works days after they launched the tool with the Texas shooting. By all legitimate news accounts, the shooter was involved in a domestic dispute. Authorities said neither race nor religion appeared to play a role in his decision to gun down more than two dozen people at a small-town church not far from San Antonio.

But on Twitter, bot accounts that might look to the untrained eye like real people got to work spreading rumors, including that the shooter had recently converted to Islam.
Consider the handle @ari_russian. In the last several days, the account has tweeted a number of incendiary comments, including questioning whether the Texas shooter was a member of Antifa. According to Bot Check, the account exhibits patterns “conducive to a political bot or highly moderated account tweeting political propaganda.”
According to a simple random sample of 1,500 political propaganda Twitter bots the students posted on their site, #texaschurchmassacre was the bot world’s third favorite hashtag on Monday, after #maga and #antifa.
It’s just the latest example of how online bots that look like real people are fueling misinformation campaigns that can alter how real people perceive the world around them.
There is evidence that Russians masked as American activists spread misinformation and tried to sow discord in the United States using Twitter, Facebook and other tools in a campaign to sway voters in the 2016 presidential election. Stories are blown out of proportion, twisted or fabricated entirely. On Tuesday, as people headed to the polls in Virginia and New Jersey to choose new governors, bots got busy spreading misinformation about the candidates.
“This becomes a very real and big problem,” Bhat said. “And it’s just going to continue increasing.”
This isn’t the pair’s first foray into trying to do something to stem the spread of fake news. Earlier this year, the pair created NewsBot, which tells users the political bent of news articles posted on Facebook. Before that, Bhat worked with another Cal student to create an app that combs the White House website and notifies users every time the president enacts a new executive order or issues a memorandum.
Lawmakers and social media users have called on Twitter and other social media giants like Facebook to crack down on bots and foreign governments like Russia that fuel propaganda, but the companies have been slow to respond.
Right now, all Botcheck.me users can do is report bot accounts and hope Twitter suspends them.
The guys “haven’t heard a single peep” from the company, Bhat said. Twitter did not respond to a request for comment from this news organization, either.
However, Bhat and Phadte say they have been inundated with what they say is positive feedback from other tech companies, to the point that it’s been difficult to concentrate on regular old schoolwork. “I almost certainly failed a quiz,” Bhat said. But he’s not too worried. The professor spent a good portion of the class praising his browser extension.
The project is generating praise outside of Berkeley, too.
“We think it’s an important project,” said Filippo Menczer, a professor of informatics and computer science at Indiana University and one of the country’s foremost experts on bots. “It is a big problem, an important problem, and the more people working on it, the better. Hopefully we can build on each other’s work rather than reinventing the wheel.”
That’s Menczer’s nice way of encouraging the pair to take a look at his own team’s work as they move forward. For several years, he and his team have been developing Botometer, which — not unlike Botcheck.me — gauges how likely it is that an account is a bot.

Right now, Menczer’s team is drawing up a research grant proposal to study not only how to detect bots, but the social and cognitive biases that make people vulnerable to bots and how to use fact-checking tools like Botcheck.me and Botometer to counter the misinformation campaigns bots wage.
In the coming weeks, Bhat and Phadte hope to grow their new invention. What it looks like in the long term is anyone’s guess, as are the pair’s plans for after graduation next year. Who knows what problems will arise to tackle next.
“Every year,” Bhat said, “there’s something crazy.”
