I wanted to run this game on a Windows 7 Basic32-bit machine with 4 gigabytes of RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon 8500 and a 500 GB Hard Disk drive. Generals work perfectly on Windows 7 even without applying any compatibility mode, and unfortunately its expansion Zero Hour has graphical display glitches.
Zero Hour runs without any 'Technical Difficulties' dialog, but the main screen of the game shows no animations and only a bright purple background is displayed. I applied a Windows XP SP3 compatibility and with admin rights.
I am able to play it but all the structures are colored pink and the map is just plain back background. I can see the Dozer (the main builder unit) but only the smoke coming out of its chimney. The game is also very fast. In short, it's unplayable.
I browsed for solutions online and found some suggestions of creating an 'options.ini' file that is supposed to be placed on the Data folder of both game located on My Documents. Here are the contents of the INI file:
AntiAliasing = 3
FirewallBehavior = 1
FirewallNeedToRefresh = FALSE
FirewallPortAllocationDelta = 0
GameSpyIPAddress = 0.0.0.0
Gamma = 50
IPAddress = 0.0.0.0
IdealStaticGameLOD = High
LanguageFilter = false
MusicVolume = 39
Resolution = 1440 900
Retaliation = yes
SFX3DVolume = 37
SFXVolume = 33
ScrollFactor = 42
SendDelay = no
StaticGameLOD = High
UseAlternateMouse = no
UseDoubleClickAttackMove = no
VoiceVolume = 40
NOTES:
: I updated the resolution to 1440 by 900 because this was the resolution of my laptop (the default resolution posted online was 1024 by 768).
: I also manually created the Data folder on my documents before loading the game but alas, all has failed.
: I just copied the game from my desktop computer where it is originally installed to my flash drive and transferred the game to my laptop(kind of like a portable version).
Any ideas on how to fix this graphical glitch? Any answer to this question will be greatly appreciated! ;]

4 years agoHello Commanders,
It's recently come to my attention that a good handful of you haven't been introduced to the v1.06 Zero Hour Community Update patch for Generals: Zero Hour. In this guide I'm going to explain what it does and how to install it.
NOTICE:This patch is optimized to fix multiplayer balancing issues and can make the single player Generals Challenge extremely difficult due to the fact that it uses a different information pool for certain units. This patch will also make your copy incompatible with v1.04 versions for multiplayer, but this can be undone easily and I'll go over it later in the guide.
This GameReplays page has a full list of changes from 1.04 to 1.06. I recommend reading through it even if you don't intend on installing the patch, as it offers some valuable insight as to how game mechanics work.
DETAILS: This patch tweaks damage output, armor, pricing, and other features of nearly every unit archetype in Zero Hour to create a more balances experience for online play. These changes range from nerfing Rockvee spam to restructuring the Generals Points system and giving the Stealth Fighter a solid role. most amazingly, Auroras and Aurora Alphas are no longer the bane of every online match, yet they're still quite competent against most targets. It also fixes some issues I didn't even know existed, like the Mig reloading bugs and the supply drop zone exploit.
HOW TO INSTALL:
Provided are the steps I used to update the Origin version of C&C Generals: Zero Hour from 1.04 to 1.06. To check what version number your copy is on, open the game, go to the OPTIONS menu, and look under the ACCEPT button in the lower middle. A version number should be provided. Use this to test if the patch was installed properly.
Download the Patch1.06.zip.zip file from the GameReplays page. If you're having trouble finding it, it's in the section above the Map Changes section after scrolling down a little bit. Extract this file.
A 17 megabyte (16,850 kb) .big file called Patch1.06.big should be in the extracted folder. Cut that file and put it in the Zero Hour Data folder. Through Origin, this can be found by following
Free Manually Patch Command And Conquer Generals Zero Hour Programs Online
C: > Program Files(x86) > Origin Games > Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour > Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour > Data
I assume that for non-Origin versions, it's wherever the Programs folders for Zero Hour are stored.
From here, test it by going through the Options menu to see the version number, or hop into an empty skirmish game and check out the General's Promotion menu. If you start with 3 points and the costs are different, you've succeeded. If not, verify that you're up to date and that the patch is in the right folder. If that still doesn't work, please let me know. I've used this method to help three people get 1.06 to run for some nice multiplayer action.
NOTICE:To undo this patch, whether temporarily or permanently, simply delete the 17 megabyte .big file in the Data folder.
Overall, I am extremely satisfied by what this patch does for Zero Hour. Let me know if you try it and if it works out.
Good luck Commanders.
